About Us
We make colon cancer prevention
as easy as it should be.
Our Story
When Dr. Michael Kelso moved to Alabama to join a GI practice, he noticed something odd. Patients were being asked to come in for an office visit just to schedule their colonoscopy — even if they were healthy and only needed a routine screening.
Back in Charlotte, healthy patients could book their colonoscopy directly through something called open access — no office visit needed.
He remembered one nurse spent her entire day trying to reach patients, walking them through eligibility questions and prep instructions—often at inconvenient times. Some people had to discuss private health issues while at work or around family.
Even though this system worked, it still wasn’t perfect. When Dr. Kelso asked why open access wasn’t used in his new town, he was shocked by the answer: "Patients here aren't capable of handling it."
That didn’t sit right.
Studies have shown that open access colonoscopy is just as safe and often faster at getting people the care they need. So when Dr. Kelso moved to a new role at the local hospital, he created his own open access program — using an online form, a nurse to review it, and a clear set of rules.
It worked. People loved it.
But there was still a problem: many patients didn’t have a computer. One day, the nurse mentioned she was calling patients to fill out the form for them because it wasn’t mobile-friendly.
That sparked an idea:
What if there was an app? One where patients could fill out the form and pick their own time?
And that’s how GutChek was born.
Since launching, hundreds of people have booked their procedures safely and easily using GutChek. Some even made it fun — like the two friends who booked back-to-back appointments and called it a “colonoscopy date.”
Others said they would never have come in if they had to make an extra trip to the doctor’s office. One person saw GutChek on social media and booked right away. Another said, “This is the only reason I got my husband to finally go.”
Stories like these remind us why we do this.
Colon cancer is preventable.
Colonoscopy can stop it before it starts—and GutChek makes it easier than ever to get one.
